We don't know what
lies ahead, but we do know that in the world of Africa oil and
gas, changes that were on the horizon in Year 2007 will be
taking shape in Year 2008. And AFRIK
ENERGY News will work diligently to bring you quality
and impartial news from many perspectives and many levels.
AFRIK ENERGY News also wish you
the crumbs from the table.
There is a story in the Bible, where a woman approaches Jesus
with a request. She talks about people abundantly feasting at a
table. She doesn't ask for a place or a plate at this feast. She
just asks that she can partake of crumbs that fall on the floor.
When you read this month's edition of AFRIK
ENERGY News, you'll see some
very, very large dollar awards.
On page 1, Daewood Shipping and Marine Engineering received a $2.1
billion USD order to build an offshore oil platform for an
unidentified company in Europe. Right under it is the story on a
$2 billion USD upgrade on a Libya refinery that was awarded to
two UAE companies. Also inside, on page 13 is another Libya
business opportunity.
Libya talks about developing a residential and commercial project -
Energy City -- that will be adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea,
outside of Libyan capital Tripoli. Technip has been awarded a
$1.1 billion USD contract by Total to develop an offshore Angola
block.
On page 3, Zambia government just completed a $1.2 billion USD
crude oil deal with a Kuwait company. Couple that story with the
story on page 15 about major power shortages in South Africa
which is the prime supplier of power to neighboring Zambia and
Zimbabwe. South Africa is reported to be scrambling to
build power plants and supplementary alternative power sources
to keep the lights on in mines and factories andd also as the
country gears up to host the 2010 soccer World Cup.
On page 5, Algeria shows just how globally monies are distributed
as they awarded $4.1 billion USD worth contracts to four
engineering companies. One company is U.S.'s General Electric. A
consortium of France's Alstom and Egypt's Orascom Construction
were party to the award. Spanish power company Iberdrola was
also included.
ConocoPhillips quarterly profits are given on page 1. Just the
profits from the company's exploration and production segment
earned $2.6 billion USD. As the U.S.'s largest natural gas
producer, ConocoPhillips definitely has a plate and seat at the
banquet table.
A small subcontract -- just a couple of crumbs -- by a service
company of these awards could feed well the company and its
employees for the rest of the year.
